An architectural shingle roof costs about $4 to $6 per square foot installed, according to HomeAdvisor, which is $400 to $600 per square of 100 square feet. Other cost pages put it higher: Modernize gives $4 to $8.50 a square foot and Fixr $5 to $15, with the top of Fixr's range made up of designer and lifetime-warranty lines. On a roof of 2,000 square feet, those figures come to roughly $8,000 to $12,000 at HomeAdvisor's prices and $10,000 to $30,000 at Fixr's. Which end you land at depends on the shingle line, the warranty you buy, and the size, steepness and condition of your roof.
Three national figures, side by side
| Source | Installed price per square foot | Per square (100 sq ft) |
|---|---|---|
| HomeAdvisor, updated June 17, 2026 | $4 to $6 | $400 to $600 |
| Modernize, updated September 23, 2026 | $4 to $8.50 | $400 to $850 |
| Fixr, updated August 29, 2025 | $5 to $15 | $500 to $1,500 |
HomeAdvisor's per-square figures are our arithmetic, its price per square foot times 100; Modernize and Fixr state theirs. The three pages do not agree because they do not price the same thing. HomeAdvisor's range is for architectural shingles as a whole, while Fixr's reaches up through designer shingles and the lines sold with the longest warranties. Read the high end of any range as the price of the premium lines, not of a harder installation.
What a whole roof costs by size
The size here is the area of the roof itself, not the floor area of the house. Our guide to roof cost per square foot shows how to get from one to the other.
| Roof area | HomeAdvisor, $4 to $6 a sq ft | Modernize | Fixr |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,500 sq ft (15 squares) | $6,000 to $9,000 | $6,000 to $12,750 | $7,500 to $22,500 |
| 2,000 sq ft (20 squares) | $8,000 to $12,000 | $8,000 to $17,000 | $10,000 to $30,000 |
| 3,000 sq ft (30 squares) | $12,000 to $18,000 | $12,000 to $25,500 | $15,000 to $45,000 |
The HomeAdvisor column is our arithmetic: its range per square foot times the roof area. The Modernize and Fixr columns are the totals those pages publish for each size. For a quick figure at your own size, pitch and material, use the roof cost calculator.
Standard, designer and luxury lines
Architectural shingles, also called laminated or dimensional shingles, are two layers bonded together. Within that family, makers sell a range of lines at different prices.
- Standard architectural lines are where most price ranges start. Modernize prices the lines it calls 30-year shingles at $4 to $7 a square foot installed.
- Upper-tier architectural lines are sold with longer warranties. Modernize puts the lines it calls 50-year shingles at $6 to $8.50, and Fixr puts 50-year lines at $7 to $12.
- Designer or luxury laminated shingles sit at the top of the range, bought mostly for their look. Fixr prices them at $12 to $15 a square foot installed.
Some cost pages also list luxury synthetic shingles in the same breath, at $9.50 a square foot on HomeAdvisor's shingle page and $7 to $16 on Modernize. Those are a different product from laminated asphalt shingles; our guide to synthetic roofing covers them.
On material alone, Modernize gives $30 to $60 for a bundle of architectural shingles, which covers about 33.3 square feet, so three bundles make a square.
What the premium over 3-tab buys
On HomeAdvisor's shingle page, architectural shingles start at $3.50 a square foot against $1.50 for 3-tab. Fixr puts 3-tab at $3 to $6 installed against $5 to $15 for architectural. For the extra money you get a second layer of material, a textured look, and a longer expected life: InterNACHI, the home inspectors' association, lists about 30 years for architectural shingles and 20 for 3-tab.
Labor is much of the bill whichever shingle goes on. HomeAdvisor says labor makes up about 60% of a shingle roof's cost and runs $1.50 to $4 a square foot; Fixr gives $3 to $5 for architectural shingles, nearer $7 on a complex roof. So the difference in the total is smaller in proportion than the difference in shingle prices. Our comparison of architectural and 3-tab shingles covers the look, wind ratings and when each makes sense.
Upgrades that change the price
Impact-resistant shingles. Fixr prices impact-resistant architectural shingles from $8 a square foot installed, up to $15 for luxury lines. In a cost survey by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), shingles that performed well or very well in its hail tests cost 9% more per square, on average, than shingles without an impact rating, with the gap varying from market to market. Our guide to Class 4 impact-resistant shingles explains what the rating does and does not promise, and how it can affect insurance.
Algae-resistant shingles. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) says algae-resistant shingles are designed to hold back algae growth for extended periods. The streaks it prevents are mostly a matter of looks. None of the cost pages we read gives a separate price for it, so ask each roofer whether the line on the estimate is algae-resistant and how long its algae warranty runs. Our guide to roof moss and algae covers the streaks, cleaning and the algae warranties.
Longer-warranty lines. Moving up within one maker's range often buys a longer warranty rather than a different look, and the price rises with it, as the next section shows.
Warranty tiers and what they cost
Shingle warranties are sold in tiers, and the tier moves the price. Fixr gives these installed prices per square foot for architectural shingles by warranty:
| Warranty tier | Installed price per square foot (Fixr) |
|---|---|
| 30-year | $5 to $6 |
| 50-year | $7 to $12 |
| Lifetime | $10 to $15 |
The number on the tier is not how long the roof will last. Modernize says shingles sold as 30-year typically last 22 to 28 years under average conditions, and reach the full term only with excellent maintenance and a mild climate. What a warranty pays can also change over its term. Our guides to roofing warranties and how shingle makers structure their lines explain proration, what each kind covers and what the longest warranties require.
How to compare architectural shingle estimates
- Check the line, not just the word "architectural". Each estimate should name the maker and product line, so you can tell a standard line from a designer one.
- Compare per square. Divide each total by the squares it covers; the same line on the same roof should come out close.
- Ask which warranty you are buying. Get the warranty's name and length in writing for the exact line on the estimate.
- Look for the extras by name. Tear-off, underlayment, starter strips, hip and ridge caps, flashing and ventilation belong in the price. Our guide to comparing roofing estimates walks through each line.
- Ask for the decking price per sheet. Rotten decking only shows up after tear-off; see roof decking and underlayment.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an architectural shingle roof cost per square?
HomeAdvisor's figures work out to $400 to $600 per square installed. Modernize gives $400 to $850, and Fixr $500 to $1,500, with designer and lifetime-warranty lines at the top.
How much does an architectural roof cost for a 2,000 square foot roof?
About $8,000 to $12,000 at HomeAdvisor's range per square foot (our arithmetic), $8,000 to $17,000 on Modernize, and $10,000 to $30,000 on Fixr. A 2,000 square foot house does not have a 2,000 square foot roof, so measure the roof first.
Are designer shingles worth the extra cost?
They cost more mainly for their look: Fixr prices them at $12 to $15 a square foot against $5 to $6 for 30-year architectural lines. If the look matters to you, compare them on the same roof against a standard line; if it does not, the standard line is the cheaper way to an architectural roof.
Do impact-resistant architectural shingles cost much more?
IBHS found that the better-performing impact-resistant shingles cost about 9% more per square, on average, than shingles without an impact rating. Fixr prices impact-resistant architectural shingles from $8 a square foot installed. Ask your insurer whether a rated roof changes your premium; this page is not insurance advice.
How long do architectural shingles last?
InterNACHI lists about 30 years with normal maintenance. The warranty tier on the package is not a lifespan: Modernize says 30-year shingles typically last 22 to 28 years under average conditions.
