What a new roof costs in Alabama

Nationally, an asphalt shingle roof costs $4 to $11 a square foot installed (see our roof replacement cost guide). Labor is about 40% to 60% of a roofing job, and a roofer's median wage in Alabama is 18% below the national median, so we scale the labor part of that range by the state's wage. That gives about $3.58 to $10.23 a square foot in Alabama.

For a 2,000 square foot footprint at a medium pitch, about 2,236 square feet of roof, that comes to $8,000 to $22,900. It is an estimate from national prices and state wages, not a survey of Alabama jobs: materials, tear-off, permits and your roof's shape move the real price. Use the roof cost calculator for your own roof and material.

A wage is not a price: an estimate also carries materials, tear-off, disposal, permits, insurance and the contractor's overhead. But where roofers earn more, labor-heavy work such as tear-off and steep or complex roofs usually costs more too.

The building code for roofs in Alabama

Alabama has no residential code enforced everywhere today: counties and cities that adopt a code enforce their own. Where no local code exists, the Home Builders Licensure Board uses the 2015 International Residential Code as the minimum standard when it investigates a complaint. Roofing contractor licensing in Alabama

A residential roofer needs a roofers license from the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board when a roofing job costs more than $2,500. Other home repair work needs a license above $10,000. Grants for a FORTIFIED roof

Strengthen Alabama Homes, a program of the Alabama Department of Insurance, gives grants of up to $10,000 to re-roof an owner-occupied, single-family primary home to the IBHS FORTIFIED Roof standard. Grants are offered only in certain counties, and the homeowner pays the FORTIFIED evaluation fee and any cost above the grant. Check the program's grant award schedule for open counties. Wind insurance discounts for stronger roofs

State law requires property insurers to include a wind premium discount for homes built or retrofitted to the FORTIFIED standard or the 2006 IRC hurricane requirements. The Department of Insurance says the discounts are mandatory in Baldwin and Mobile counties. Ask your insurer what credit a FORTIFIED certificate earns. Source: Alabama Department of Insurance.

A state residential code from 2027

A 2024 law gave the Home Builders Licensure Board sole authority to adopt an Alabama Residential Building Code. From January 1, 2027, builders who build, renovate or repair a home must follow that code or the local code where one applies. Local jurisdictions with permitting and inspection programs enforce it. Price gouging after a declared emergency

When a state of emergency is declared, Alabama's price gouging protections apply, and prices more than 25% above the pre-storm average may be illegal. The Home Builders Licensure Board also notes that roof work over $2,500 requires a licensed contractor. Complaints go to the Board or the Attorney General's Consumer Interest Division. How we got these numbers

The Alabama estimate is our own arithmetic: HomeAdvisor's national range of $4 to $11 a square foot, with its labor share (40% to 60%, per HomeGuide) scaled by Alabama's median roofer wage over the national one (21.96 ÷ 26.65 = 0.82), times 2,236 square feet of roof, rounded to $100. Rules change: check the agency named in each source before you rely on it. This page states facts about Alabama; it does not say that HomeAnvil or any contractor works there.
